Overview

Course content and focus areas  The dual Master's degree in Social Ethics in Healthcare is a practically oriented program designed to prepare graduates for engaging and responsible roles in the healthcare sector. By integrating study components from medical and social ethics, social sciences, and medicine with practical elements, this course cultivates a unique competence profile that meets the increasing demands of the healthcare sector.

Graduates will be equipped to address medical ethical issues arising between treatment teams and patients, navigate organizational and leadership ethical challenges within complex healthcare processes and institutions, and manage broader concerns such as financing, resource allocation, and incentives in healthcare. These challenges necessitate proficient internal and external communication and effective organizational development. Professionals trained in this program will be adept at fostering value-oriented, sustainable, and ethically reflective practices in a dynamic and highly professional healthcare environment.

Graduates will be qualified for both staff and management roles within healthcare institutions and will be capable of ethically adapting and advancing these institutions. They will develop skills in analysis, evaluation, moderation, and communication, enabling them to mediate effectively between patients and clinics, doctors and patients, and among staff facing organizational and normative challenges.

The necessary skills are drawn from fields such as medical, institutional, corporate, and management ethics; social sciences, with a focus on structural issues in the healthcare system; and medicine, particularly clinical ethics. As a dual, practice-integrated program, the Master's combines university coursework with job shadowing and projects in relevant professional contexts. It also includes an internship semester in a healthcare institution.

The Master's degree program is designed for Bachelor's graduates with backgrounds in ethics, medicine, or sociology. This includes degrees in Catholic theology, Protestant theology, religious studies, Islamic studies, sociology, political science, philosophy, economics, education, psychology, educational science, social work, or nursing. Prospective students with different Bachelor's degrees or those considering a transfer from an undergraduate MA program (such as Mag. Theol.) are encouraged to contact the Student Advisory Service.

This Master's program is a collaborative effort between Goethe University and the Philosophisch-Theologische Hochschule Sankt Georgen.
